Singer, songwriter and harmonica player Jovin Webb represents the soulful style of blues that abounds in his home state of Louisiana and particularly in the Baton Rouge area. Perhaps best recognized nationally as a finalist on ABC’s talent quest, American Idol, Webb delivers clever lyrics with sincerity on Drifter, an album full of original compositions, some of which were co-written by renowned producer Tom Hambridge, who also plays drums and provides back-up vocals.
This, Webb’s debut release, kicks off straight up with the rhythmic “Bad Deeds,” that immediately brings a smile with lines like, “I ain’t no genius, but I learn my lessons well.” Webb sets a different tone for the slow, old-school groove of “Drunk on Your Love.” Variety is key as Webb moves through the many faces of blues to include its and his influences. “Livin’ Reckless” suggests Webb’s gospel roots, having played drums in church as a child. The organ-like keyboards of Mike Rojas reinforce the gospel sound.
Webb, who resides in Gonzales, Louisiana, is certainly the star of the show here, though the team effort of these fine musicians is totally apparent. Not lookin’ for the spotlight yet guitarist Kenny Greenberg and bassist Rob Cureton do shine.
Dig that Webb and company head to some pure, screamin’ rock ’n’ roll on the hilarious, “Wig on Wrong” and bring in the horns of saxophonist Max Abrams and trumpeter Julio Diaz. No doubt that Webb has some early rock ’n’ roll deep in his bones.
As both a talented vocalist and composer, Jovin Webb makes his music personal. On Drifter he’s a storyteller whose future tales are eagerly awaited.
