On Same Mother Moran uniquely delves into the relationship of jazz and blues with his long-lived group, Bandwagon, with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. Joining in is guest guitarist Marvin Sewell. Born in Houston, the pianist grew up around the blues having two relatives who played with the great Albert King. He acknowledges the relationship by selecting to perform “I’ll Play the Blues for You.” Under his astounding mastery and that of his band members the theme of the song is initially stated then blooms with emotional and improvisational adornment. There’s somewhat of a reverse in philosophy when Moran takes on Mal Waldron’s jazz classic “Fire Waltz” as he touches it with blues roots. Moran getts down in a boogie-woogie mode on his original “Jump Up.” The pianist’s left hand booms as Sewell rides the thunder. That’s merely the take-off point for the entire band’s powerful charge. The album is flanked with two more aggressive Moran originals, “Gangsterism on the Rise” and “Gangsterism on the Set,” with a number of quieter, though equally inspiring, moments between. This is one super-tight, like-minded, group of superb musicians whose time together screams and shouts with every note.
