That this trio, led by vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, boasts all rhythm instruments states its uniqueness on every cut. These guys—including Oscar Rossignoli on piano, Gerald Watkins on drums and Jasen Weaver on bass—are tuned into each other’s syncopation and grooves. The group was captured live in May 5, 2017 at the now-defunct Little Gem Saloon as part of Basin Street Records’ 20th anniversary celebration. All the material comes from Marsalis’ pen and appeared on several of the vibraphonist and drummer’s previous Basin Street releases. Notably, and perhaps surprisingly, the album is Marsalis’ first live recording as leader.
It starts out strong on “Ratio Man Swings Again” with Marsalis’ vibes and Watkins’ drum matching steps, and the group working as one on a simple phrase. Then the tune really gets swinging, set off by the brilliant piano of Rossignoli. That Marsalis quotes the melody of Danny Barker’s “Palm Court Strut” in the middle of all this brings a grin.
“Passionate Dancer” offers romance and elegance with its soft tango tempo while “Bourbon Street Ain’t Mardi Gras,” which stylistically and melodically suggests “Bourbon Street Parade,” is an imaginative and fun take on the New Orleans classic. Rossignoli throws in some “near” quotes from the tune before Weaver’s full-toned bass takes the spotlight.
After several elegant numbers, the group lightens the mood and get swinging again to take the album out on “At the House in Da Pocket.” A toe-tapper, it wraps up the night with Marsalis out front struttin’ his dexterity with the mallets.
Jason Marsalis Live offers the spontaneity of music created by truly talented artists playing in the here and now while performing before an appreciative, though occasionally a bit rowdy, audience.
