Jan Luley, Blues Gumbo (Luley Music Records)

Forty years ago, inspired in part by New Orleans émigré Champion Jack Dupree, a whole school of German boogie-woogie piano players was birthed: Axel Zwingenberger, Vince Weber, Joja Wendt (a Dutchman actually, who studied in Germany) and many others. Now we have players who have gone beyond mere boogie to dig into New Orleans R&B styles, and Jan Luley is one of the best. Blues Gumbo, his latest, has a more-than-credible cover of the Melvin Lastie/James Booker tune “Keep on Gwine” and a killer take on Booker’s fiendish original, “Pixie.” There’s a slowed-down version of Dr. John’s paean to his mama, “Dorothy,” as well as some nicely original boogie and duets with Lillian Boutte’s longtime partner, Thomas L’Etienne. This Germanic world is unknown to most New Orleans music listeners; this is a fine disc to start investigating.
