It’s crazy but in the 14 years that Jamie Bergeron & the Kickin’ Cajuns have been in existence and built cred for its live shows, the group had never released a live disc. Until now. Still, it was worth the wait a solid document of over-the-top performances with no cheesy, dubbed-in crowd effects.
The group attacks most songs with reckless abandon and paint-peeling rides by guitarist Keith Blair and keyboardist Mike McCann. Jason Bergeron and special guest, the late Chad Cormier, manage to slice up some dandy fiddle rides (“Chere Tout Tout”).
All the crowd favorites that helped establish Bergeron are here, including the throttling break-out hit “Shake It Shake It Baby” and the novel French language version of Richard LeBouef’s “Empty Glass.”
Yet, with any Bergeron disc, it’s not all zouped-up Cajun-zydeco selections but includes a few mid-tempo, breath-catching swing strutters, belly rubbers and beautiful waltzes as well. A fair bit seeps in from other genres, like AC/DC’s “Back in Black” on the intro to “Flammes d’Enfer.” On Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” Bergeron sings the last portion in French over a slight Rasta beat.
Goofing around with rap also helped Bergeron establish his audience, which is noted here on several ’90s rap hits as part of “Garde Pas Ca/Old Skool Remix.” Great party music for party people—if you weren’t invited, feel free to crash.
