The Jamaican Me Breakfast Club has reggae-fied another ’70s soft-rock classic, last time it was The Carpenters’ “Close to You,” now it’s Bread’s teary ballad from 1972. And this one isn’t that big a stretch—in fact there already was a hit reggae version, by Ken Boothe in 1974. But JMBC give it an entirely different groove, with Rob Savoy on bass and Boyanna Trayanova on drums it can’t help but have a New Orleans flavor. (They also restore Bread’s guitar intro, one of the best parts of the song). An expressive vocal by Rueben Williams, who also manages the VOW Allstars, puts it over. So, a seriously good track instead of a jokey throwaway? Baby, I’m-a want that.
