Anyone who’s recently seen local indie popsters Jai Alai play live will notice that the complexity of their sound has intensified since the recording of The Division EP, their latest release.
Though the band released an eponymous 7-inch earlier this year, Jai Alai dug deeper with The Division EP, comprised of material dating as far back as 1998. Since the album’s recording, the group has completely metamorphosized, adding a second guitarist and a new drummer. Still, Jai Alai’s core aesthetic remains intact due to founding member Jake Springfield’s influential hand in the band’s distinctive, bass-centered compositions.
The songs on The Division EP flow seamlessly together, alternating a keyboard-infused electronic pop with a darker, more elaborate collaboration. This soothing soundtrack of unarguably quality compositions is a worthwhile and characteristic example of Jai Ali’s promise.
