Imagination Movers, Stir It Up (Rec Room Records)

For any parent sick of the frumpy purple dinosaur, or those well-rounded beings with various head protrusions, the blue coverall-clad Movers offer a style of music closer to what modern Moms and Dads have downloaded on their MP3’s. Appealing to kids aged 2-7, the human quartet comprised of Rich Collins, Scott Durbin, Dave Poche and Scott “Smitty” Smith are fond of describing themselves as “The Beastie Boys meets Mr. Rogers,” and have been capturing the essence of rap, rock, even reggae, in their tunes since 2002. Like the Beastie Boys, the Imagination Movers rarely play their own instruments, and unlike them they get caught banging on buckets, cans and using giant toothbrushes as stage props.

The DVD lasts about 40 minutes, and was filmed partially at the Movers “Idea Warehouse,” a cool set, again, simple enough for kids to digest, but with good visuals covering all the basics, and partially on stage during a live performance at the UNO Arena on Father’s Day. It is a big help to have “hip” Dad’s in the group, since they know the subject they are singing about well and don’t hesitate to bring their modern tastes into the mix.
