In her new single “I Feel Okay,” indie folk pop artist Lyla DiPaul explores the human experience of finding beauty in small moments when everything may not, in fact, feel okay.
DiPaul’s lilting, dreamy vocals paired with atmospheric guitar and a steady drum beat encapsulate the feeling of what the lyrics present at the beginning of the track: getting home from a party, doing what you can to take care of yourself, and waking up late the next afternoon.
The hazy fullness of the instrumental clears at the chorus as DiPaul sings the line, “It gets so lonely around here / I go out anyway,” thrusting DiPaul’s naked vulnerability to the forefront. It’s a sobering moment in the track that lays bare a need for human connection.
At the end of the chorus, when DiPaul finishes the line, “There’s always at least one moment. When I feel okay,” the lush instrumental comes back in full swing, and DiPaul returns to her lyrical reflections.
The imperfections in DiPaul’s vocals throughout the song add a necessary rawness to the track akin to that which can be found in Lucy Dacus’ debut album “No Burden.” Something that both DiPaul and Dacus do beautifully is that they both present how difficult it is to be a young woman with little sugarcoating to be found. You can hear the emotion in DiPaul’s vocals and words–life is hard, but you have to believe that everything will be okay.
DiPaul presents a powerful message in this single about coping with the melancholy of everyday life and how to ground yourself, and that is a message that everyone needs to hear every once in a while.
