Contemporary R&B singer Greezy’s voice on Soul City is reminiscent of the male vocals found on a ’90s Boyz II Men album, yet his experimentation with combining different genres makes him distinctive. Playful, sensual and provocative at times, the album is alluring and hypnotic, so much so that the eight-track disc flows quickly. The short one to two minute songs are often underdeveloped, but “Cuales Su Nombre” is an upbeat, catchy Samba that stands out on an otherwise slow and soulful EP.
“Call Me” is the highlight, and it features New Orleans rappers Bayou Boy and Manny Lee. The song opens with a jazzy horn solo followed by lyrics in which Greezy likens the relationship between lovers to that between a girl and her mobile service provider. He promises, “I’m a make you a believer / when I come through your receiver.” The surprising lyrics possess a sexy playfulness that is amusing, particularly on a disc that primarily consists of a series of ballads mourning lost love and hoping to find a way “Back to Love.” Greezy’s smooth and melodic lyrics string you along inescapably conjuring images of past lovers to mind. The sensual, soulful jazz tones and original lyrics combine to leave a lasting impression surely “making you a believer.”
