English group Fujiya & Miyagi make clever dance rock based on Krautrock’s motorik beat, and Lightbulbs picks up where Transparent Things, their last album, left off. It’s silly as David Best deadpans the chant “Vanilla, strawberry, knickerbocker glory” over a droning organ and a second burbling keyboard. “Uh,” its follow-up, is similarly clever with a cool groove that pelvic-ly grinds to a halt with a series of “Uh”s in the chorus. After that, though, tempos slow, song structures become more involved and the breezy sense of riding that accompanies the motorik beat is muted. Fujiya & Miyagi simply make generic dance rock for most of the album until the closer, “Hundreds & Thousands,” an instrumental that puts them back on familiar, more successful terrain.
