Of all the bands working the college funk circuit in 2014, Flow Tribe stands out as one of the best. They play with contagious dance energy complete with a certain sartorial splendor. Also, unlike many of the bands playing funk now, they play actual songs instead of jamming on one chord for interminable hours. Their songs have changes, bridges, and parts instead of endless noodling. Flow Tribe’s latest release comes from a concert recorded at Tipitina’s in September 2013. It’s full of punchy horns, crisp guitar, and powerful drums. Songs like “Hungry For You” and “Tight Wire” are hard hitting, and “Gimme A Line” is slinky, but they all bring the funk. Another admirable aspect of Flow Tribe’s music is that their songs have variety. There is tight funk, but they also add a Latin/Caribbean vibe in songs like “Gosando” and “Run With You.” “Sexy Body” brings a ’70s pop sound with a very clean and nimble guitar line. From the way the crowd sounds, Flow Tribe knows how to get them engaged. One downside of that is that sometimes the vocal attitude and call and response straddles the divider between entertainment and “Hello, Cleveland, we’ll be back to rock you soon” shtick. However, great New Orleans musicians such as Louis Prima made a career of straddling that divide, and Flow Tribe’s swinging number “Anthony” shows that they have a sense of humor that can get them through very well.
