Pianist Oscar Rossignoli, bassist Matt Booth and drummer Brad Webb continue to display their individual and collective musical expertise on this third release as the trio Extended. It opens strongly with Webb’s original, “Prominent Randy,” that emphasizes the rhythmic aspect of their respective acoustic instruments. Attention to the space between the notes, between the beats, accentuates the tune’s lively attitude. Booth’s “Impairment Process” stands as a well-positioned follow-up as it continues the rhythmic theme of the opener. Adding another element, Rossignoli’s right hand flutters magically along the upper register of the keyboard while his left holds down the bottom. Webb’s drums, however, have the last word before the trio works as one at the conclusion.
As a brilliant contemporary improvisation-bent jazz trio, Extended prevails as a collective with each of the musicians exchanging ideas in the moment and each contributing original material to the endeavor. Booth’s walking bass gets Rossignoli’s “Sphere” rolling, with a more light-hearted melodic vibe, with the pianist skipping, then flying along the keys with what sounds like obvious pleasure.
Melody is also at the forefront on Booth’s bittersweet ballad “Not Like Before.” The beauty of this song is enhanced by the tonal quality of the instruments, an element that reigns supreme throughout.
More explosive moments finish out Without Notice, all of which live up to the album’s title as the trio often takes off in very satisfying yet surprisingly unexpected directions.
