A more appropriate title for this one might well be A Lugubrious Session With, as this sounds pretty much stuck in neutral. Yes Robillard is a monster on the guitar and a distinctive vocalist, but there’s a lot of after hours noodling here. “Deed I Do” starts “swingin’,” but it gets stuck in traffic pretty quickly. “Just Because” has a touch of jumpy gypsy jazz which might inspire guitaraholics, but it leaves the ordinary listener unimpressed. “Red Dog” has its moments, but at nearly seven minutes in length, the listener’s attention will tend to drift. “They Raided the Joint” has a Louie Jordan influence but the results are by now predictable. Unfortunately, the best thing I can say about this release is that it came from Alberta. Seek out 2006’s Guitar Groove-A-Rama to hear Robillard at his best.
