When the term swamp pop is bantered about, it’s often associated with its original stars still hanging on today. For the most part, there haven’t been loads of newcomers but there is fresh blood in Don Rich. The performer from the bayou town of Pierre Part has remained consistent with solid originals (a few were recorded by Wayne Toups) and listenable albums capable of converting party poopers into party poppers. Similarly, his latest swells with another batch of strong originals sung by Rich’s made-for-prime-time voice. He’s a compelling vocalist, a rare breed that can make a simple love song anyone’s experience. Track after track, Rich’s songwriting is on the money while the stellar horn section, keyboard and guitar always manages to express the right sentiment. Swamp pop does seem to be the rule but Rich also pulls off some fine poodle skirt rock-n-roll, New Orleans R&B and even some Toups-style Cajun rockers. If you’re at home with the variety of south Louisiana idioms presented here, then you’re at home with Don Rich.
