Don Rich, Bayou Soul (Jin Records)

Once again Don Rich underscores the fact that no one feels a song better than bayou soul brother number one. To unequivocally demonstrate that point, Rich daringly sets his sights on four tunes from influential Memphis soulster Otis Redding (“Sad Songs,” “Dreams to Remember,” “Don’t Be Afraid of Love,” “My Lover’s Prayer”) and conquers ’em all with the utmost class, grace and finesse. His interpretation of William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water” is sublime and it doesn’t hurt to have a crackerjack band featuring saxman Jason Parfait and guitarist Todd Stelly paralleling Rich’s cavernous, heartfelt sentiment. Closer to his native bayou waters, Rich applies royal treatment to idol Joe Barry’s “I’m A Fool To Care,” Johnnie Allan’s “Cry Foolish Heart” and Jimmy Clanton’s “Just a Dream.” But the plethora of ballads doesn’t mean Rich ducks the twist-and-shout thing either. Instead, Tommy McLain’s “Lose the Blues” and Larry Williams’ “Boney Maronie” practically tilt the jukebox while two originals bookend these proceedings, “What Went Wrong” and the powerfully emoted “Hey Mom.” Bayou Soul may be this record’s christened name but it’s also a trademark that Rich should some day consider registering.
