Diana Krall’s lack of self-consciousness is the chief virtue of From This Moment On. Big band swing feels dated, but Krall performs it as if a half-century hasn’t passed since Ella Fitzgerald recorded the title song. Similarly, she may be one of the most popular contemporary female jazz vocalists, but there are no star turns or bravura performances. Instead, she comfortably, unassumingly embraces the task of making each song sound like an expression of her thoughts, and she phrases expertly when doing so. Her voice has become more distinctive and lived in, but like Fitzgerald, there are times when she seems more into the magic of the music than the thought in the words.
