Big Daddy ‘O, What You Gotta Go Through (Rabadash)

This is a highly entertaining set of well-chosen covers and telling originals. A case in point of the latter is the title track, which addresses a situation we all too often find ourselves in (“You can’t go around what you got to go through”). Another clever original, “Don’t Worry ’Bout It Baby,” has a warm delta/Chicago blues feeling even with the inclusion of an organ. “Got No Blues Today” also deserves mention if only because it’s a damn good song. Anders Osborne contributes a couple of songs that suggest that he is continuing to grow as a tunesmith.

Of the covers, Willie Dixon’s “300 Pounds of Joy” and Merle Travis’ “Sixteen Tons” are most convincing. The only stumbling block is the inclusion of “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” a song that’s been done to death. Plenty of local musicians in the mix here, so there’s an underlying New Orleans feel throughout. A remarkable release.
