Big Al Carson, Take Your Drunken Ass Home (Mardi Gras)

If they were to elect a blues king on Bourbon Street, Big Al Carson would certainly be in the runoff. A great live performer, Carson’s recordings haven’t always captured his gregarious onstage manner.

Obviously the title track—which has been a hit around these parts for two years—remedies that situation. So too does the opening track, “Because I Got High,” Carson’s bluesy treatment of Afroman’s recent novelty. In between there’s a few Carson originals but mostly covers. Of the covers, “Dippin’ My Dipper” and “Meet Me With Your Black Drawers” are the strongest.

I don’t see the need for another version of “Strokin’” or an eight-and-one-half minute version of “Tell It Like It Is,” but hey, they work on Bourbon Street. “Everyday Dreamer,” is concise and entertaining revealing Carson may have talent as a songwriter.

Lots of outboard support here, as Jon Cleary, Steve Blailock and Irving Charles appear. Worth investigating, particularly if you don’t have the riotous “Take Your Drunken Ass Home” on another collection.
