A casual perusal of allmovie.com’s entry for Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece debut Citizen Kane, in which a reporter seeks the hidden meaning of the title character’s last word (“Rosebud”), yields the adjectives literate, sweeping, atmospheric, enigmatic, poignant and melancholy. Whether or not New Orleans duo Baby Rosebud derived its name from that movie is anyone’s guess. However, Welles’ classic is a convenient starting point for describing Baby Rosebud’s Cyrillic exotica. Their latest release, Shipwreck, is driven forward by the drumming of Lauren Dinkler (who fills in on keyboards on the songs “Desert” and “Sitar”) and carried over the threshold by Courtney Lain’s accorgan—a rare Italian made accordion/organ hybrid that’s both acoustic and electronic and allows for a wide range tones and sounds. This is lush, yet minimalist background music that one would expect to find in some imaginary Eastern European brothel ca. 1930 that’s retro without being contrived. “Rosebud” turned out to just be a sled—a symbol of lost youth and innocence (my apologies to the culturally illiterate). And just as Welles’ simple metaphor held deeper truths, Baby Rosebud’s stripped down gypsy cabaret is much greater than just the sum of its two parts.
