Outside of the Superdome Sunday, a couple of guys were handing out CDs, by – I discovered reading the sharpie on the home-burned disc – Buttaboy. Saint’s Ready 2 Rumble Pt. 1 contains five Saints-related rap songs, and I appreciated the hustle to get his music in people’s hands. I’m also impressed that those bad boys didn’t get frisbee’d on to the field during the fourth quarter of that mess.
I wish I was more into Buttaboy, but there’s a lot of party rap over average beats – “When I say Marques / You say Colston” – and too often they rely on the players’ names, making for a lot of awkward lines. The winner is the unnamed first track, likely “Who Dat Nation” (as in “pledge to …”), but it’s more interesting for its oddity than its greatness. Rhyming “city” with “city” and “nation” with “nation” is a little weak, but lots of credit for rhyming anything with “dyslexia” and for talking about the Saints’ off-field activities including the Drew Brees Foundation.
Unfortunately, Buttaboy’s emblematic of the season so far: wild and inconsistent.
