I’m in the process of uploading a video I shot last night of my favorite Christmas lights in town – a couple of houses in Jefferson at the corner of Jefferson Park Avenue and Honore. It’s not that the lights are so extreme, but at one house in particular, someone has amassed an impressive collection of light-up lawn figures and stuffed a porch and window with plush figures, some of which move, and some of which are just more of the usual glorious excess.
For the video’s soundtrack, I laid on a track by Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra – something funky – and no sooner than a progress bar showed the video to be uploaded than we received an email from YouTube saying that WMG – Warner Music Group – had taken down the video. Since Lee’s on Ubiquity, an independent, I’m not sure how Warners has any say in the matter, but it’s not like there’s a call-in center at WMG that I can reach to argue the point with someone. Evidently Warners wishes me a Merry-friggin’-Christmas and a Happy Go Jump in a Lake.
Instead, you get some obscurities on the soundtrack by French artist Herman Apple and a Moog Christmas track by Joseph Byrd. Not as funky, but it’s not “This Christmas” either.
