Nothing marginalizes you like acting as if Twitter, Facebook and apps require special geek knowledge to understand. First, these things are ridiculously easy to use as anyone who’s tried them discovered, so dismissing them as the playthings of the office nerd conveys the message that you’re not even trying. Second, since Twitter and FB link people and fascilitate communities, acting as if they’re inscrutable mysteries marks you as someone left out by choice or fear – hardly an advertisement for anyone’s merits.
I understand those who choose not to deal with either, but to publicly dismiss them as too complex to bother with marks you as part of the Mimeograph Generation.
