Local fans of groovy, avant- garde jazz collectives should color themselves lucky that Dallas, Texas-born, New York City-based Snarky Puppy have on the books a gig at the Howlin’ Wolf, as this group is now blowing up on a global scale that won’t allow for such sized venues in the near future.
With momentum building on reputation for stirring live performances that mix flourishes of funk, jazz, R&B, world music and more, Snarky Puppy recently released the acclaimed album Sylva, a collaborative work with Holland’s ground-breaking, genre-bending Metropole Orchestra.
On the heels of such success, the collective will follow its New Orleans appearance, their first at a club here in nearly two years, with an extensive tour that takes them next to Red Rocks in Colorado then a run of shows of California before taking off to Japan and Europe, ending that sojourn over Halloween in Denmark (playing with Metropole Orchestra), then next to Brazil and Argentina before finally brining it home in celebrating New Year’s Eve at Irving Plaza in New York City.
Simply put, for fans of the collective artistry of Sparky Puppy, or virtuoso live- wire musical acts in general, this show is not to be missed.
Snarky Puppy performs 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Howlin’ Wolf. Tickets $20.
