It is notoriously difficult to make money in the music business. For every U2 or Billy Ray Cyrus, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of equally talented and/or deserving artists who will never score even a regional hit. For the most part, the Ma and Pa record store, the small music publisher, and, most of all the independent specialty record label, are gone.
