There was a rumor going around that legendary Led Zeppelin singer, Robert Plant was going to make an appearance at Tipitina’s with Lil’ Band o’ Gold. It seemed incongruent that Plant would be hooked up with a swamp pop band from Lafayette, but curiosity filled the club and there was a buzz of expectation. I was there to hear Lil’ Band o’ Gold, who impressed me at OffBeat’s tribute to Fats Domino a few months back. I was there for more of the band’s kickass, good ’n’ greasy sound, but when Plant walked on stage I went nuts along with everyone else. It was a visit to remember from British rock royalty. Plant was extremely polite as a temporary member of the swamp pop supergroup, and his voice is as good as ever. The band led him through a healthy set of swamp classic songs including “Sea of Love” and then got their Led on with a metaled-out sing-a-long rendition of “Whole Lotta Love.” It seemed unbelievable that this was actually happening, but it was and it did. As it turns out, Plant was in town to record a Fats song with Lil’ Band o’ Gold for Tipitina’s tribute album to benefit Domino and the non-profit Tipitina’s Foundation.
