What’s At the Top of Billboard’s Charts? OffBeat!
Congratulations to Jan Ramsey and the entire staff at OffBeat on its 10th anniversary. For a decade, the magazine has been a national must-read and an essential local chronicle for anyone who cares about the music of the Crescent City, past, present and future. What a difference every issue of OffBeat makes! Let the good times and good journalism roll into the new millennium.
Sincerely,
Timothy White, Billboard’s Editor-in-Chief (New York)
Addicted to OffBeat Down Under
Please sign me up for another 12 months of OffBeat. What can I say? You have caused me to become addicted to New Orleans music, food and people. Even though I live on the other side of the world-Australia-I’ve been to four of the last five Jazz Fests (a 30-hour flight each way!) and it has been worth it every time. I work to earn money so that I can return to New Orleans. I really look forward to receiving a copy of your Festival ’98 CD as it allows me to sample the artists that I’ve read about but not yet heard (which inevitably leads to further CD purchases).

Slick Is O.K. After All
Happy 10th anniversary to everyone at OffBeat!
You’re one of the main reasons that I bought a computer and got on the Internet last year. On the first of each month, I can check out the latest cover and read a few articles while I’m waiting for the magazines to arrive. And speaking of covers, don’t ever go back to the old newsprint style. When I wrote three and a half years ago objecting to the new, glossy cover, I must have been having a bad hair day! I got over it! Thanks for a great magazine!
Sincerely,
Jim Mulligan

Robin Lacy & DeZydeco
Thank you OffBeat for ten great years! We’ve been subscribing to your magazine since its inception (which is, perhaps, unusual since we live in Cincinnati, Ohio). Your magazine continues to be a great source of information and enjoyment to us. We thank you for that and wish you continued success.
Our interest in Cajun, zydeco and Louisiana music in general came to life in 1988 when my wife and I visited New Orleans for the first time. We were so inspired by Rockin’ Dopsie at the Maple Leaf that we came home and put together our own Louisiana-styled band, complete with accordion and rubboard.
We also host a radio show (Crawfish Fiesta, 15 years and running) dedicated to programming all styles of great Louisiana music every Tuesday night on WAIF Cincinnati (88.3 FM) from 8 to 10 p.m. Because of our listing in your Louisiana Music Directory many of your local artists and record companies have sent us CDs (which are impossible to find in our area). We appreciate this and hope they keep them coming!
Again, thanks so much for all that you have done for Louisiana music and its great culture. It has impacted our lives in a most positive way and your magazine is a vital part of spreading the word.
Here’s to another great ten years!

Robin Lacy & DeZydeco will performing live at the plaza level of the stadium in Indianapolis before the Saints and Colts (with Peyton Manning) on Sept. 27 from 10 to 11 a.m. Robin and the band love to meet and greet anyone anxious for a taste of Louisiana-styled rock-n-roll.-Ed.
Issues in East Sussex to the Year 2000 and Something
Thank you for our subscription reminder. Please find enclosed $200 in traveler’s cheques which we still have left over from our last annual visit to Jazz Fest (just prior to the arrival of our children who have curtailed their parent’s foreign vacations). Would you adjust the length of our subscription to take into account this overpayment?
Sincerely,
Michael and Philippa Vine

Now that’s what we call a subscriber!
Leader of the Pack
I am writing to compliment you on a fantastic article on Walter “Wolfman” Washington. Your article only confirms what [I] hope is a common feeling, that Walter is the “Leader of the Pack.” He has consistently turned out fantastic records over the years. Walter exemplifies everything that is good about music and really conjures up whatever you might be feeling at the time when you listen to his music. I can only hope the rest of the world is aware of his talent and can share his special gift.
I would also like to compliment the photograph that graced the cover of that issue (July 1998). If possible, I would love to know if there is a way to purchase a copy of that photo to hang in my office. Congrats on your 10th anniversary and keep the great issues coming.
Regards,
Keith Rosenberg
