Bookmark Misses the Mark According to Fox
I read your column [“Bookmark” by Alex Rawls] monthly and normally respect your opinions. But I have to disagree with you concerning Obituary Cocktail (OffBeat, January 1999). This work does not capture the spirit and atmosphere of any of the bars represented. How can it when all the photos were taken during the day with no patrons? Lafitte’s (Blacksmith Shop) for example, loses its appeal and allure without its dankness. You know, it’s not too difficult to photograph a place when you can control everything. What’s difficult is capturing the essence when you don’t have that advantage. That’s the mark of a great photographer.
Sincerely,
F.G. Fox

A Question From Holland
As my subscription to OffBeat expires in February 1999, I have a question which will help me decide what kind of subscription I should take out: Are the tracks on the free Festival CD (offered with every first class subscription] new tracks or are they songs previously released by the artists? Far away from New Orleans, OffBeat is of great worth to me, in particular for information about new releases. All the best for 1999.
Sincerely,
Jan Haringman

Jan, the latest Festival compilation CD offers previously released songs from Tiny Town, Amy & the Hank Sinatras, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers, Lenny McDaniel and many more. Sign up for yours today!–Ed.
Speaking the Language of Music
I stayed in New Orleans from Dec. 23 1998 to Jan 2. 1999. This was the first time for me and I really enjoyed New Orleans. In fact, I loved the city. Besides, during my stay, OffBeat was very helpful to me. Please sign me up. I am looking forward to receiving your magazine at my home.

From The Thumbs Up City
During my Christmas holiday visit to Louisiana, I picked up an issue of your magazine and brought it back to Chicago. I must say that you have a wonderful publication and I enjoyed the articles so much that I plan to subscribe. By the way, one of my favorite blues musicians here in Chicago is Ronnie Baker Brooks, the son of Lonnie Brooks. Any chance for an article on Ronnie anytime soon?
Thank you,

Thanks for your kind comments, Cassandra. We’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for Ronnie Brooks down the road.–Ed.
