Good Enough for Good Times played their brand of groove oriented jazz/funk music to a packed house at Tipitina’s. Galactic’s bassist and guitarist (Robert Mercurio and Jeff Raines) keep it tight, enabling outrageous bop-like lines from young organ master Joe Ashlar, who interacts nicely with drummer Simon Lott (Charlie Hunter Trio). Lott, too, brings the jazz, making unconventional use of time in fills that finish right on the beat. GEFGT’s energetic improvisation laid over the rare grooves, funk standards and original jams inspired the crowd to part to form a circle between the soundboard and basketball hoop where a break dancing competition continued for a good 20 minutes. The dancers’ upside down feet swinging through the air adjusted according to solo notes and the new ideas forming onstage. The tangible groove of GEFGT lays the foundation for the more abstract flow of soloing which, unlike other bland jazz/funk bands, is soulful and rocks quite well.
