The Marigny Opera House is launching its own professional modern dance company dedicated to the work of local choreographers and musicians. Beginning this October (and then again in January and April) the company will host a full season of performances, featuring the work of choreographers Maya Taylor, Donna Crump and Diogo de Lima.
The Marigny Opera House will also hold auditions for six dancers to perform in their yet-to-be-created pieces on Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with callbacks the next day.
In order to help the new dance company get on its feet and pay (!) all the choreographers, dancers and musicians involved, the Opera House is seeking support through a Kickstarter campaign with just about a week left to go.
Directors Spencer Doyle and Dave Hurlbert are excited about the different collaborations that could happen in the new dance company, working with as many as nine choreographers per season and possibly involving local composers in writing original music for the dancers, performed live by local musicians.
The new dance company will rehearse and perform in the landmark Marigny Opera House in New Orleans, a restored 1853 church that has functioned as a free performance space for artists and non-profit arts organizations since 2012.
The Marigny Opera House has already presented scores of productions, including the Marigny Opera House New Dance Festival (2012, 2013), the International Puppet Festival (2012, 2013, 2014) and New Orleans Fringe Festival (2012, 2013, 2014), as well as the 9th Ward Opera Company (2012, 2013, 2014) and Shotgun Cinema.
The Marigny Opera House Dance Company’s season schedule will be October 24-26 (fall production), January 23-25, 2015 (winter production) and April 17-19, 2015 (spring production).
