This Saturday (February 22) Robert Randolph and the Family Band rides into Tipitina’s where it will headline a bill that also features Americana outfit the Ben Miller Band. A familiar face on the New Orleans front, Randolph’s fiery pedal steel has lit up many a Crescent City night over the course of the last decade. Last year, Randolph closed out Hogs for the Cause alongside local guitar hero Anders Osborne. More recently, it was announced that sacred steel jamband supergroup the Word — which includes Randolph on pedal steel; Medeski, Martin & Wood’s John Medeski on keyboards; and the North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson on guitar and Cody Dickinson on drums — would play a late night show at the Joy Theater after Jazz Fest on April 27.
In July 2013, Robert Randolph and the Family Band dropped Lickety Split, its first endeavor on Blue Note Records. The album, which is jam-packed with Randolph’s high-flying fireworks, features the song “New Orleans,” a soulful nod to the Big Easy, as well as a spot from Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews on the second line strut “Take the Party.” A fine testament to Robert Randolph and the Family Band’s thrilling and uplifting live shows, Lickety Split captures the band clicking on all cylinders… which bodes well for what the group might have in store for Tipitina’s.
Hailing from Missouri, the Ben Miller Band has an uncanny knack for turning just about anything into a musical instrument. The primary vehicle of songwriter/guitarist/one-man-band Ben Miller, the trio also boasts washtub bassist Scott Leeper and percussionist Doug Dicharry. The Ben Miller Band’s 2012 effort Heavy Load superbly showcases its unique bend of bluegrass, Delta blues, roots rock and country music.
Tickets for Robert Randolph and the Family Band’s concert with the Ben Miller Band at Tipitina’s on Saturday, February 22, 2014 are $27.50 and available online. Doors open at 9:00 p.m. Tipitina’s is located at 501 Napoleon Avenue (map).
