One-time child Cajun prodigy Hunter Hayes continues to rack up awards, and added to his list the title of Choice Male Country Artist in the 2013 Teen Choice Awards held in Universal City, California over the weekend. Now 21, the Breaux Bridge native recently went platinum with his self-titled major-label debut album and its single “I Want Crazy.”
Hayes is no stranger to big-time shows: One of his first career peaks came at the age of eight, when Shania Twain invited him onstage at the Cajuindome in Lafayette (as OffBeat reported, Hayes was reluctant to sing because he’d forgotten his accordion).
Last September Hayes celebrated his 21st birthday by singing the National Anthem at the Saints’ home opener.
Two months later he was named Best New Artist by the Country Music Association, and he won the Best Emerging Artist award in OffBeat’s Best of the Beat Awards this past January.
