PhotoNOMA is not a typical museum browse.
The New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA), in partnership with The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), will host an interactive portfolio night featuring 100 photographers tonight. PhotoNOMA is free and open to the public and will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
For those who are photography enthusiasts or point-and-click amateurs, the exhibit will offer a wide range of artists including George Long, Kimberly Edwards, Perry Papadopolous and Julie Dermansky.
PhotoNOMA coordinator Jennifer Shaw emphasizes the unique dynamic that PhotoNOMA is offering. “There aren’t a lot of places where you can have the opportunity to meet and view the work of 100 artists and ask questions about their technique, subject matter or motivation,” Shaw says. “The interactive nature of this event is what sets it apart from so many other exhibitions.” Shaw describes the eclectic mix of photography as ranging from grandma’s snapshots to fine arts photography.
Grace Wilson, Director of Communications and Marketing at NOMA, says the event caters to those with a “treasure hunting mentality.”
“I think in New Orleans we get the attitude that we know everyone,” Wilson says. “I think some unknown photographers can come out and shine; it’s who can discover the next new photographer in town.”
While the event is largely local photography, 10 photographers will be coming in from Texas and Mississippi. A complete list of participating photographers can be found at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Web site.
