How far you go with Amos Lee is contingent on how far a soulful voice carries you. Last Days at the Lodge has an impeccable support system—producer Don Was, guitarist Doyle Bramhall, Jr., keyboardist Spooner Oldham, bassist Pino Palladino and drummer James Gadson—and in the album’s best moments, they help Lee achieve some soulful Americana blues, but only “What’s Been Going On” sticks. There’s other good stuff here—actually, there’s nothing wrong—but it moves too much into Al Greensville for “Won’t Let Me Go” or roots rock miscellany for “Listen,” and rarely does anything but Lee’s voice seem distinctive. Fine, but not special.
