The Guardians Institute and Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame are hosting the 2015 Night Out Against Crime, at the Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum on Tuesday, October 13.
The event is dedicated to the memory of late New Orleans drummer Joseph “Smokey” Johnson, who passed away last Tuesday. A drum tribute to Smokey will be held at 5:15 p.m.
Also featured in this event is a Mardi Gras Indian performance, free adult and children’s books, and a variety of food options, with healthy food advice, snack packs, red beans and rice, fresh fruit, grilled burgers and hot dogs.
Festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. and go on through 7 p.m. The Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum is located at 1930 Independence St.
Services for the “Smokey” Johnson will then take place on Friday and Saturday, October 16th and 17th. A wake and musical tribute will be held at the Charbonnet Funeral Home on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will take place on Saturday, with a viewing at 8 a.m. and a service at 9 a.m. at Asia Baptist Church.
