On Friday, September 13, DJ Soul Sister will throw her 13th annual birthday show at Tipitina’s. DJ Soul Sister celebrates her birthday with a special guest at Tipitina’s each year, with a show that’s open to the public. Mannie Fresh, this year’s guest, will perform a set to honor the work of his fellow New Orleans DJ icon. This show marks the second installment of the duo’s Body Rock party (after their first joint performance in 2017), a show dedicated to rare classics in the R&B and hip hop genres.
“Soul Sister is a real crate digger—her education in music is what drew me to her,” said Mannie Fresh, speaking to Frank Etheridge in 2017 about their past Body Rock show. “She plays songs I’ve never even heard of. She finds jamming songs that nobody’s ever heard of and she knows exactly when to play them. If you’ve been to one of her parties, then you already know. Artists get to a certain level of fame, or whatever you want to call it, and they have no idea what’s going on in the world. (DJing) gets me back to my roots. Getting people out on the dance floor and escaping from life—that’s what a good DJ does—get people to party like there’s no tomorrow.”
In the same year DJ Soul Sister aired similar sentiments regarding Mannie Fresh to Etheridge, saying, “I feel like a lot of people only associate him with his success with Cash Money and all his productions. They don’t associate him with old school. But that’s where he comes from. That’s where all of us come from. Cutting, mixing and scratching—he comes from that tradition. He grew up on that, as did I.”
The show is 18 and up. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door or $15 with student ID (either at the door or in advance at Tipitina’s box office). Doors open at 9 p.m., with the show set to start at 10 p.m. Tipitina’s is located at 501 Napoleon Ave. Free birthday cake will be provided for attendees.
