JanPhoto-1207 ON MY MIND...

No drink recipes this week, although the "Mandatory Evacuation" from the last Weekly Beat seemed to have garnered a few laughs from our readers (Clamato and prune juice cocktail--yuck! Feels like Beavis & Butthead around here).

CNN and Travel & Leisure Magazine named New Orleans the best dining and live music destination in the US. Well, of course we are! But you know, Austin, TX still bills itself as the "Live Music Capital of the World"...and New Orleans doesn't have that kind of catchy little slogan, and we really, really should. The idea apparently came from the fact that, in Austin, music has been recognized as the driver of the "creative economy" that translates into millions of dollars annually for Austin. Austin City government recognized that music is one of the things that makes Austin special, and created several programs to help musicians and promote their music.

It was in 1991 that blues musician Lillian Standfield, returning from a gig in Houston, saw a city limits sign and thought Austin needed a slogan to promote music. She approached the City's Music Commission with the idea of Austin becoming the "Music Capital of the USA." City staff research found that Austin had more live music venues per capita than such music hotbeds as Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City (did they check New Orleans?).

A City Council member's suggestion that Austin should be the "Live Music Capital of the Universe" resulted in a classic political compromise and the "Live Music Capital of the World" became the City's official slogan by Council Resolution on Aug. 29, 1991. Check out the city ordinance that created the official slogan for Austin!

We obviously need a great music slogan that everyone will adopt. I promise I'll be the one to introduce it to the Ctiy Council! How about "New Orleans; Best Live Music in the US" or "New Orleans: Where American Music Was Born" or ...I don't know...why don't you email your suggestions to me at janramsey@offbeat.com; we'll choose the best and publish them in the next Weekly Beat!

If you haven't done so already, please renew your OffBeat subscription. We want to be able to continue to update you on what's happening down here, y'all!

Darby-Crash
PUNK ROCK FLASHBACK

The Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center pays tribute to 1970s cult punks Patti Smith and Darby Crash through film. Dream of Life by Steven Sebring follows the godmother of punk through 11 years of travel, performances, spoken word, lyrics, interviews, painting and photography. Smith herself narrates, revealing a complicated, charismatic personality in this winner of the Sundance 2008 Excellence in Cinematography Award.

What We Do Is Secret by Rodger Grossman tells story of the boy Jan Paul Beahm's transformation into the self-destructive man, Darby Crash and the rise of the Germs. Both films run nightly from September 19 through September 25. Dream of Life plays at 7:30 and What We Do is Secret plays at 9:30.

Friday night kicks off a week of the films with a tribute concert honoring the Germs and Patti Smith with performances by the Pallbearers, Sons of Marvin Hirsch and Won Ton Lust. If you are interested in performing at the event contact Curtis Cottrell at cmcottrell@lycos.com. General admission is $6, $5 for students and $4 for members.

A RIDDLE WRAPPED IN AN ENIGMA
WRAPPED IN POLYESTER

In 2006 at a Future of Music Coalition benefit at Tipitina's, "singer" Tony Clifton was invited by Bonerama to sing a shaky version of "For Once in My Life." When he didn't feel appreciated, the irascible lounge singer once associated with comedian Andy Kaufman started telling Polish jokes and abused the crowd, much to the confusion of Steve Earle and Tom Morello, who were also onstage at the time.

But Clifton has found New Orleans to his liking, and previewed his new show at One Eyed Jacks a few months back, and by all accounts, it made his appearance at Tipitina's seem tame in every way. He brings his special brand of music, humor and confrontation back at One Eyed Jacks Monday and Tuesday night with the Cliftonettes and the Katrina-Kiss-My-Ass Orchestra, many of whom are from New Orleans.

Artist Charles Bazzell has struggled since Katrina, dealing with roof problems, a damaged studio, no kitchen and economic uncertainly. To help Bazzell, a number of musicians and artists have come together to throw a benefit for him at One Eyed Jacks Sunday from 4 p.m. until it's over. George Porter, Jr. will perform, as will Lil' Queenie, Johnny Sansone, the Bad Roads, Dickie Landry, Jon Smith, Larry Sieberth, C.C. Adcock and the Louisiana Marquis (pictured), Jesse Dayton, Twangorama, David Egan, Jimmy McDonell and John Mooney. There will also be a silent auction of art by such artists as Bazzell, Francis Pavy, Dickie Landry, John Geldersma and Jimmy McDonell.

GETCHA NEWS HERE!

What would New Orleans be without the ability to laugh at the absurdities of living here?

The Creole Tomato is the post-Katrina brainchild of some ex-pats and Jesuit boys who relocated to New York City, where they found the room they needed to be able to make fun of some of NOLA's more bizarre practices. The Creole Tomato makes fun of everyone and everything, and you've got to love the mayor's MySpace page.

Check out the new bumper sticker, new streaming video from WWL, and the best paper to line your crawfish boil table.
