JanPhoto-1207 Greetings!

On My Mind...

By the time you read this, most of the Louisiana contingent who will be attending the 50th Annual Grammy Awards will have arrived in Los Angeles, myself included.

I'm pretty excited about attending this event, not so much to see Beyonce et al at the telecast, but to be present when the first recipient of the new Cajun/Zydeco category gets up to accept the award. It's great to have Southwest Louisiana music and musicians honored like this. I wish the new CZ Grammy category had been established 10 years ago, when Beau Jocque and Boozoo were still around, and when the new "Young Turks" of zydeco were just starting out. But I'm thrilled for the Lost Bayou Ramblers, Terrance Simien, the Racines, the Pine Leaf Boys, Roddie Romero and the Hub City Allstars, Geno Delafose and Lisa Haley.

Best of luck to you all.

MARDI GRAS REDUX

Right now, we're all probably a little Mardi Gras'd out, but Saturday starting at 6 p.m., the Jazz and Heritage Gallery (1205 N. Rampart St.) will display "Mardi Gras 2008, 360 Degrees." The show is a photo exhibition with work by 20 visiting and 15 local photographers who documented this year's Carnival in all its complexity. The goal of the show is to see how locals and out-of-towners perceive the most quintessentially New Orleans event. The show will be up for the rest of February, with the gallery open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prints will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the project as well as its community partners, which include the Neighborhood Story Project, the Big Nine Social Aid and Pleasure Club among others.

The details.

FESTIVALS A'COMIN'

With Mardi Gras behind us, we now start looking forward to the festival season, particularly the French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest. One of the more intriguing bookings at Jazz Fest this year is Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, who last year recorded the critically acclaimed Raising Sand. Those curious about the pairing can check it out Monday night at 7 p.m. Central Time when the two appear together on CMT's Crossroads.

One Jazz Fest event that has so far flown under the radar is the Ponderosa Stomp Revue featuring Tammy Lynn, Archie Bell, Roy Head, and Dennis Binder, that will take place Saturday April 26. For six years, the Ponderosa Stomp has presented the unsung heroes of R&B, soul, blues, rockabilly, funk and swamp pop during the week between Jazz Fest weekends (with the exception of 2006, when it was held in Memphis). It not only returns this year to the House of Blues April 29 and 30, but it returns to its traditional two-night format while also putting on a show at the Fair Grounds. Tickets for Jazz Fest and the Stomp are on sale now.

The full Stomp.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

TV TIME

In the current "Backtalk," we talk to Damian Kulash of OK Go and Mark Mullins of Bonerama about the bands' team-up benefit EP, You're Not Alone. The EP is now available for download from iTunes, and the bands will appear together on Monday on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Another local artist, Eric Lindell, will be on TV as well as he performs this Friday night on Late Night with Conan O'Brien

FATS UPDATE

February 23, Tipitina's is celebrating Fats Domino's 80th birthday with a show that will include Randy Newman, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and Clarence "Frogman" Henry along with a band that includes Jon Cleary, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Shannon Powell, Richard Moten, Roger Lewis, James Rivers and Eric Traub. We wouldn't count on tickets being available at the door.

MEETINGS OF NOTE

The New Orleans Professional Musicians Women's Club meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Musicians Union Hall.

LA TV
Robert Vernon and Russ Brabham recently launched Big Chief TV as part of their new Louisiana Digital Network. The network is designed to share Louisiana's cultural assets with the rest of the world, and when the infrastructure's in place, it will stream full screen HD video on demand to living room televisions over broadband Internet. The Big Chief TV Store will also sell downloads of mp3s and video on demand for iPods and other mobile media players. For a preview, go to BigChief.tv.

HOT CHOCOLATE

Sunday, Generations Hall (310 Andrew Higgins Dr.) hosts WYES' 6th annual Chocolate Sunday. From 3 to 5 p.m., the afternoon is a chocolate lover's dream, with tastings of chocolates and chocolate-inspired creations. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Seniors and groups of 6 or more can get advance tickets for $30.

How do I get chocolate tickets?

TIME TO SET SAYLES

The New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) will host the local premier of Honeydripper, a new film from Director John Sayles. The film, starring Danny Glover, will be screened at Lupin Hall on the NOCCA campus at 2800 Chartres St. on Monday February 11 at 7 pm. John Sayles will be in attendance and will have a short Q&A session following the film.

What else has John Sayles Done?

HERITAGE SCHOOL HOLDS AUDITIONS

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation schools hold auditions

Don "Moose" Jamison was a longtime New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival board member, and he conceived the program "Strike Up the Band" to get instruments to New Orleans area school bands. He helped start the Heritage School of Music Band that teaches big-band playing to grade school musicians. In memoriam, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation named its school after Jamison.

Auditions for the next session of the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music will take place today at 3:30 p.m. at Lusher Charter High School (5624 Freret St.), then Saturday, February 9, at 10 a.m. in the Cook Fine Arts Center at Dillard University (2601 Gentilly Blvd.). The school is open to music students ages 11 to 18 from the greater New Orleans area. Instruction will be in brass, woodwinds, piano, bass, drums and voice.

Lusher and Behrman Schools are the campuses for beginners and intermediate level students, and beginners should be able to able to play a major and minor scale, identify notes on a staff and play at least one song. Students should own their own instruments and should bring them to the auditions.

Dillard will be the site for more advanced students, who will receive instruction in composing and arranging, computer programs for music notation and music business. Applicants should be able to perform a song (preferably a jazz standard) that demonstrates their full range of ability; demonstrate an ability to improvise over a blues form in the keys of F and B flat; play chromatic scales (F major and B flat major) over the entire length of their instrument; and sight-read an unfamiliar jazz composition. Pianists and bassists should demonstrate the ability to read chord changes, and drummers should show that they can play "straight-ahead jazz time" (swing and shuffle beats) at different tempos.

Faculty for the Heritage School of Music include practicing musicians Kidd Jordan, Kent Jordan, Germaine Bazzle, Jonathan Bloom, Edward Anderson, Leah Chase, Geoff Clapp, Brent Rose and Jesse McBride.

Go here for more information on the school.
