JanPhoto-1207 ON MY MIND...

It's early evening on this beautiful May day in New Orleans. The weather is glorious, most--but not all--of the Jazz Festers have gone back home, and I'm thinking how lucky I am to live here.
I was walking down Decatur Street on Monday and saw an artist displaying his works on a fence. I'm used to seeing original art on the fences around Jackson Square, but this display was only about two blocks from our Frenchmen Street office. James was displaying, of all things, intricate silhouettes that he had made cut out and fashioned by hand. He makes prints of the original silhouettes and sells them in diferent sizes and colors. My friends, they were truly works of original art! I asked him why he wasn't on Jackson Square--where more tourists go--and he told me he'd been run off by other artists and the city, whose policy it's been to prevent prints from being sold on the square, so the art sold there won't become too crassly commercial. Lo and behold, our local business paper, CityBusiness, did a story on this problem that you can read here. I can see both sides of the story and the potential for exploitation, but I just can't see why an individual who makes their living as an artist can't sell their original prints. I'd like your input on this. Email your feedback to janramsey@offbeat.com...and see you soon for the Vieux-To-Do (a half mile of festivals in June in the Vieux Carre/French Market, including the Creole Tomato Fest, the New Orleans Seafood Festival, and the Cajun Zydeco Festival)!

TIME FOR A REST

Jazz Fest is over. Chaz Fest is over. The Ponderosa Stomp is over. Fess Jazztival is over. Midnight Preserves are over. Every other named and unnamed Jazz Fest-related event, gig and series is over, so we can get some sleep, eat food that requires the use of two utensils at the same time, and wash our filthy ankles and shoes.

If you want to relive the festival, look for our June issue, with our writers' recollections and photographers' highlights of the events at the Fair Grounds and beyond. Or, you can buy downloads of many of the Jazz Fest shows including Leo Nocentelli's Rare Funk Gathering, Shamarr Allen, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave., Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys (pictured), and Phillip Manuel's tribute to Nat King Cole, along with out of town acts including the John Butler Trio, Alejandro Escovedo, Del McCoury and Widespread Panic.

Where do I download?

A REAL MOTHER
FOR YA

Mother's Day is Sunday, so everybody remember to call your momma. If you want to work a little music into your celebration, Irma Thomas sings her annual Mother's Day concert at Audubon Zoo for the 25th year in a row from 2:30 to 4 p.m. (free with admission to the zoo), and the New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra performs a free show at Cabrini Park (the corner of Dauphine and Barracks streets in the French Quarter) from 4 to 7 p.m.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

A VOODOO CHANGE

Last week, we announced the headliners for this year's Voodoo Music Experience, which takes place October 24 to 26. The reunited Stone Temple Pilots, R.E.M. and Nine Inch Nails (pictured) will perform, but the Neville Brothers have opted out of the yearly Halloween festival in City Park. So far, three New Orleans acts have been announced-the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and the New Orleans Bingo! Show, who played an electrifying set during Jazz Fest. Tickets for Voodoo are on sale now.

LIVE LIKE A ROCK STAR, MINUS THE STDs

The Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp takes the baseball fantasy camp concept to the stage, where this summer counselors Gilby Clarke (Guns n' Roses), Elliot Easton (The Cars), Earl Slick (David Bowie/John Lennon), Dave Ellefson (former Megadeth bassist), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), Chris Slade (AC/DC), Mark Hudson (Grammy Award-winning writer/producer, Aerosmith), Kip Winger (Winger) and more instruct arena rock wannabes in the fine art of rocking out. This year, the Fantasy Camp goes on tour, starting July 9 at the Rocklahoma Festival, during which time campers will open for King's X and Extreme. The tour will visit the New Orleans House of Blues August 18. Packages start at $1,999 and scale up from there.

DOES SOMEONE OWE YOU MONEY?

Musicians, Sound Exchange once again reminds us that they're collecting digital performance royalties for artists whose work is played on Internet or satellite radio, and they believe they have money for New Orleans and Louisiana artists waiting to be claimed. For more info, go to SoundExchange.com, call (202)-640-5858 or email info@soundexchange.com.

So you wanna be a rock superstar?

PHILLY TO NEW ORLEANS

Philly to New Orleans is a non-profit organization that raises money in Philadelphia through benefits and comes to New Orleans to aid in the rebuilding efforts. Three bands or artists from Philadelphia will be in town on the weekend working on a house in Pontchartrain Park, and they'll perform Thursday from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Blue Nile-jam/funk artist Andrew Lipke, who hosted last year's Philly to New Orleans Mardi Gras Benefit; country blues band the Great Unknown; and "basement rock" band Throws Like a Girl.

What can you do?

The May 2008 "Jazz Fest Bible" issue of OffBeat is one of the best things about coming to Jazz Fest!

OffBeat's annual Jazz Fest issue features the Neville Brothers, with a special thanks to the Angela King Gallery for providing the image.

Our cover this month features the Brothers Neville, with artwork done by Patterson & Barnes. Visit the Angela King Gallery at 241 Royal Street to see more of their work, or click right here.

OffBeat's Jazz Fest issue also includes features and interviews with Leo Nocentelli. Shamarr Allen, Terrance Simien, Rob Wagner, Jazz Fest food, Gal Holiday, the Ponderosa Stomp, and so much more! OffBeat gives you the inside skinny on Jazz Fest performances, food and what's happening in the city throughout the month of May, post-Fest.

Look for your free copy of the "Jazz Fest Bible" in locations all around New Orleans, including all local hotels and motels, and of course, at Fairgrounds entrances. Each issue of OffBeat's "Jazz Fest Bible"contains not one but two stage schedules (one a fold-up pocket-sized guide), as well as a pocket guide to what's going on at local clubs throughout Jazz Fest. GOODBYES

During the second weekend of Jazz Fest, many musicians said goodbye from the stage to Edgar J. Smith, the tuba player for the Olympia Brass Band. He died in his sleep in Richmond, Texas at age 56. We also learned that Fats Domino's wife Rosemary (pictured) passed away in March after a prolonged illness. Our sympathies and best wishes go out to their families and friends.

...and keep Louisiana live music alive and kickin'!

NPR Morning Edition recently broadcast a story on the demise of music magazines. If you missed this story we encourage you to listen.

Like No Depression, Paste and others, OffBeat is experiencing similar issues, with postage costs increasing considerably (with another increase due May 10, 2008) and the loss of advertising dollars from record companies. Although OffBeat maintains a strong local presence, we also have struggled to replace lost record label advertisements. Since both Tower Records and Virgin Megastore closed in New Orleans, two full page monthly advertisements that were financed primarily by record labels were lost. Music magazines like Rolling Stone are insulated by these losses because their subscription base is large enough to attract other forms of advertising. Plus, OffBeat has been steadfast in maintaining a credible editorial stance, and is not rife with the paid "advertorial" that seems to dominate a lot of local publications.

If you are reading this email but you do not subscribe to the print edition to OffBeat we encourage you to purchase a subscription. Doing so helps OffBeat sell advertising to prospective advertisers who are look at our total distribution numbers before making the commitment. The larger the distribution the more likely OffBeat will be able to attract these advertisers.

When you buy an annual subscription you receive 12 issues including the Jazz Fest Bible issue and a free unique compilation CD of Louisiana music. If you like the Weekly Beat, please consider this small investment in our ability to provide information on New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture, and to pu rchase an OffBeat subscription.

Subscription prices to increase April 22

Our subscription prices increased effective April 22. This is the first subscription price increase since the magazine began nearly 21 years ago. The average increase is about 20%. The rising cost of postage (another increase is due in May) forced the increase:
