LMD09 IT'S HERE!

It's finally here! If you need information on Louisiana musicians or music businesses, then the Louisiana Music Directory is your cup of tea. It's been online now for quite a while, but we've got the print version ready for distribution. If you'd like to purchase a copy, click here.

ON MY MIND...

The sky is blue, and weather a bit toasty, but Louisiana doesn't have to experience the brunt of Ike. I'm sorry that some of you out there may be worrying and preparing to evacuate. Hurricanes--even when they don't hit you directly--are no fun. Maybe the party atmosphere in New Orleans and southern Louisiana has something to do with the stress we're all under for six months every year, I don't know. It's stressful for all of all us who live and work here.
Friend and St. Charles Tavern manager Max Hiller sent me this list of "Hurricane Drinks" for your pleasure because it is New Orleans policy to follow all instructions and report to the nearest liquor store in the event of a hurricane!

MANDATORY EVACUATION
1 1/2 oz. Absolut Ruby Red vodka
1/2 oz. vermouth
Clamato
Prune juice
Combine vodka and vermouth in cocktail glass. Fill remainder of glass with equal parts clamato and prune juice. Stir. Drink. Ask next-door neighbor whose ficus tree blew over and crashed onto your roof-- even though you'd warned him for months to uproot it--if you can use his bathroom. Repeat.

CATEGORY 5
1/2 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. tequila
1/2 oz. rum
1/2 oz. bourbon
1/2 oz. gin
Sweet-and-sour mix
Splash of fruit juice
Combine vodka, tequila, rum, bourbon and gin in a tall glass. Fill remainder of glass with sweet-and-sour mix and splash of juice. Stir, then garnish with an inverted drink umbrella. Drink during peak storm hours, and vow not to believe anyone who tries to tell you the hurricane that flooded your garage and destroyed your shed was just a Category 1.

CONE OF PROBABILITY
1 oz. cinnamon schnapps
1 sugar cone
Pour the schnapps into the sugar cone. Every time you hear a TV weatherman say, "cone of probability," bite off the end of the cone and down the shot. If you hear Weather Channel StormTracker Jim Cantore say it, drink two shots consecutively. (they should change this to the "Cantore Zone"... damn him.) Have you ever noticed that, despite all the cone of probability talk, if Cantore is parked in front of your house your ass is toast?)

FEEDER BAND
2 oz. Midori
2 oz. rum
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
After your home loses power, combine Midori and rum in a cocktail glass. Add a scoop of the vanilla ice cream that is melting in your freezer. Stir, and drink through a straw.

BEACH EROSION
1 1/2 oz. Goldschläger
1 1/2 oz. apple brandy
1 pack Sugar in the Raw
Combine Goldschläger, apple brandy and sugar in cocktail glass. As you drink, seriously contemplate moving your Yankee ass back to New Jersey where it belongs.

DOWNED POWER LINE
1 1/2 oz. rum
5 oz. Jolt Cola
Combine ingredients in a cocktail glass. Drink while trying to figure out how the heck you're supposed to go two freakin' weeks without television and AC.

FLOOD ZONE
2 oz. Kahlúa
2 oz. Baileys Irish Cream
4 oz. rum
Serve in a 6-ounce glass and laugh-cry deliriously as the mess spills all over the countertop.

COLD SHOWER
2 oz. Blue Aftershock
4 oz. Sprite
Combine in a cocktail glass with crushed ice you received after waiting in line for three hours at a mall parking lot. Take a deep breath, sip and scream like a little girl when the cold beverage hits your tongue. Repeat.

LOOTERS WILL BE SHOT
1 oz. Jack Daniel's
Splash of sarsaparilla
Rock salt
Load both barrels of a shotgun with rock salt. Climb to the roof of your house with gun, bottle of Jack Daniel's and can of sarsaparilla. Fill shot glass with Jack and splash of sarsaparilla. Watch for looters. When you spot one, blast his ass with rock salt. Drink shot. Repeat.

THE CHAIN SAW
1 oz. Goldschläger
1 oz. Rumplemintz
3 oz. Jim Beam
Splash of vermouth
Combine Goldschläger, Rumplemintz and Jim Beam in an empty soup can. Add splash of vermouth. Drink. Remove chain saw from garage and attempt to cut up fallen tree limbs in yard. Ask neighbor to drive you to hospital when it all goes horribly wrong.

FOUR-WAY STOP
1 1/2 oz. vodka
1 1/2 oz. vodka and Midori
1 1/2 oz. vodka and Galliano
1 1/2 oz. vodka and grenadine
Pour each ingredient into a separate shot glass. Serve one to yourself and three other people. The person with the clear shot of vodka drinks first. The person to his right drinks the Midori shot, and so on. If somebody drinks out of order, develop a quick case of road rage and beat the living crap out of him.

BLUE TARP
1 1/2 oz. Curacao
2 oz. pineapple juice
Splash of lime
Combine ingredients in a leaky paper cup and serve. Wait six to eight months for someone to repair the cup. If you're impatient, hire an unlicensed, out-of- state contractor to do the job for an exorbitant sum and pray he doesn't hurt himself in the process.

FEMA FIZZLE
1 1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
2 oz. sloe gin
Tonic water
One week after the storm has passed and your neighborhood is still in ruins with no sign of help on the way, combine Southern Comfort and gin in a cocktail glass. Fill remainder with tonic and add a dash of Angostura bitters. Serve with a nut brownie. Before drinking, raise the glass and say the toast, "Doing a helluva job Brownie."

On a more serious note, today is a pretty significant date in American history, one that will go down in "infamy" for those of us who will always remember September 11, 2001. As a country, we are still reeling from the trauma of the WTC collapse, the tragedy for all the families whose loved ones perished on that day, and the terrible consequences for the United States over the past seven years in terms of lives lost, our national reputation and our economic situation vis a vis the rest of the world.

If you haven't done so already, please renew your OffBeat subscription. We want to be able to continue to update you on what's happening down here, y'all!

As always, we appreciate your reading OffBeat, and the Weekly Beat, our e-publication, and welcome your comments on what can make it better.

OffBeat's "VOODOO FEST" deadline for space reservations is September 17.

We love you for supporting Louisiana music and culture!

MUCH ADO ABOUT VOODOO

Last week, we reminded you that Voodoo looms. Shortly after sending that, we received an update from Voodoo with news about the festival that takes place in City Park October 24-26. Out of town acts the Mars Volta, TV on the Radio, N.E.R.D. , Eagles of Death Metal, Angels and Airwaves, Butthole Surfers and Fishbone are now on the bill, as are locals Porter, Batiste & Stoltz (pictured), Irma Thomas, Hot 8 Brass Band, Hot Club of New Orleans, Vavavoom, Leo Nocentelli, Dr. Michael White Jazz Band, 101 Indian Runners and ManWitch.

The day by day scheduling is complete. Stone Temple Pilots and TV on the Radio headline Friday night, Nine Inch Nails and Lil Wayne top Saturday's bill, and R.E.M. and N.E.R.D. lead a celebration of bands with initials Sunday. Now that the daily breakdowns have been announced, single day tickets are available for $50.

Day-by day, at the "Tenth Ritual."

WILD STYLE

Underground graphic artist L. Steve Williams (whose work is pictured) has once again curated the 504 What Style Rock Art Circus, opening Saturday night at the Big Top/Three Ring Circus (1638 Clio St.) at 6 p.m. The show will feature rock-themed art as well as work by Williams and Exene Cervenka of X (did you know Ms. Cervenka was once married to Viggo Mortensen?), Jimmy Bower from metal bands Eyehategod and Down, tattoo artists Donn Davis and Randy Muller of Eye Candy Tattoo, Roxie Le Rouge from Bustout Burlesque, Bella Blue from Fleur de Tease, along with paintings, photography and short films hosted by Time Code NOLA's Randall Perez, and much more.

Also on hand for opening night will be a 6 ft. Roach Man, Skeleton Krewe members, tattooed pin- up girls, burlesque dancers, fire breathers, and fire dancers. Suplecs-who have used Williams' art on their CD covers--will perform, as will the Bills, a New Orleans horror surf rock band. Admission is free.

Exene Cervenka on visual art.

WORDS MATTER

We may be in the middle of an election campaign where words are kicked around as casually as cans on a country road, but for James McMurtry (pictured, at One Eyed Jacks Monday night) and David Berman of the Silver Jews (One Eyed Jacks Wednesday night), they're crucial to their art. On McMurtry's recent album, Just Us Kids, he continues to make protest music that rocks not by spouting rhetoric but by depicting the lives of people living here today, people who have to make hard-sometimes dubious-choices to survive these times. Then again, he's not afraid to call it like he sees it, and "Cheney's Toy" takes solid aim at the man McMurtry sees as the real president of the last eight years.

On Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, Berman and the Silver Jews take the words poetry--seriously without getting at all precious, singing as if the fate of his lonely heart rode on these words, or neglecting to rock. Instead, the songs move like smart songs studded with excellent lines.

An interview with the Silver Jews' David Berman.

CreoleTomato

GETCHA NEWS HERE!

What would New Orleans be without the ability to laugh at the absurdities of living here?

The Creole Tomato is the post-Katrina brainchild of some ex-pats and Jesuit boys who relocated to New York City, where they found the room they needed to be able to make fun of some of NOLA's more bizarre practices. The Creole Tomato makes fun of everyone and everything, and you've got to love the mayor's MySpace page.

Check out the new bumper sticker, new streaming video from WWL, and the best paper to line your crawfish boil table.
