Jan-JF06 ON MY MIND...

It may rain and pour, but never, ever will the elements keep the hordes away from Jazz Fest!

Last weekend was dampened by torrential rains, but we cozied up in a (relatively) dry place with our friends Steve and Vlada who come in every year for Jazz Fest from New York and California, respectively. Big Jay McNeely was amazing--81 and going strong. The highlight of that rainy afternoon was the Ponderosa Stomp showcase at the end of the day, and Roy Head stole the show away from Tammy Lynn. Poor Archie Drell was cut off after performing "Tighten Up" because of the "monsoon," but, damn, that show was great, even in calf-deep water! I wouldn't be surprised if Ponderosa Stomp gets its own stage next year.
There are evening shows all over town and a big one-- last minute--is "Bo Fest" at and around Handa Wanda's, on Dryades Street between First and Second Streets in Central City Thursday night. Big Chief Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias welcome Davell Crawford, Marva Wright, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Papa Mali, Rebirth, Tommy Lee (yes, THAT Tommy Lee), Ludacris, Trombone Shorty, and much more. Tickets are $15-$20 (at press time, we weren't sure! It's really cool because it's just down the street from my house.

Another big one: on Saturday check out the "All Nighter" at 619 Frenchmen street, across from d.b.a. featuring M.I.A., ?uestlove, the New Orleans Bingo! Show, King Britt, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Holy Fuck
, and a late, let set, then DJ Soul Sister's Breakfast Jam
. More info here.

Correction on Voodoo Music Experience presales: Ticket presales for $100 weekend passes begin at 10 a.m. on Monday May 5th

READY FOR MORE?

We've toweled off, we've dried our feet and hosed down our shoes, so we're ready for more Jazz Fest. This weekend, in addition to our team distributing OffBeat outside the Fair Grounds [we're outside the Gentilly and Sauvage Street entrances] and writers and photographers covering the fest, we're also involved in the Allison Miner Music Heritage/Lagniappe Stage. Steve Hochman wrote our February piece on the Grammy controversy and Fest Focuses on Derek Trucks and Bettye LaVette, and Friday at 2:20 p.m. he'll interview Ann Savoy. Saturday long-time contributor Herman Fuselier will interview Isabeau about English/French ballads at 2:30 p.m., and editor Alex Rawls will interview Austinites Ruthie Foster and Alejandro Escovedo at 4:50 p.m.

What might we hear from Derek Trucks?

VOODOO FOR THE TENTH TIME

The Voodoo Music Experience celebrates its 10th anniversary October 24-26, and this year's headliners include Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, R.E.M. and the Neville Brothers. All are returning acts except R.E.M., who are appearing for the first time. The festival will return to the City Park grounds it occupied last year, and another 140 acts will be announced in June. Three-day weekend passes go on sale Monday morning at 10 am for $100.

Voodoo's Rehage Productions also present the all-night Jazz Fest show Saturday night with M.I.A., ?uestlove, the New Orleans Bingo! Show, King Britt, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Holy Fuck. M.I.A. was one of the highlights of last year's Voodoo, and the show-sponsored by OffBeat among others-will be the first at 619 Frenchmen Street between the Spotted Cat and the Apple Barrel.

More Voodoo.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

WE CAN'T MAKE THIS UP

Mem Shannon plays Jazz Fest Thursday at 11:15 a.m. in the Southern Comfort Blues Tent, but if you miss him there, you can also find him between the pages of Jonathan Maberry's new novel, Bad Moon Rising. The book concludes the horror trilogy that also includes Ghost Road Blues and Dead Man's Song, and Shannon shows up to fight the undead. And here's a problem Jazz Fest doesn't face. At Coachella last weekend, the two-story tall inflatable pig that Roger Waters' sent airborne during his performance of Dark Side of the Moon broke loose from its moorings and floated off into the California desert night sky. California readers-Coachella organizers want the pig back, and they're offering a reward of $10,000 and four festival tickets for life in return. If you have information on the runaway pig, email lostpig@coachella.com.

A GIFT

Wednesday afternoon, Mikio Shoji, Chairman of the New Orleans Jazz Society of Tokyo gave a $15,000 gift to the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic during the Ponderosa Stomp Conference at the Cabildo.

GRETSCH GREATS

This year, Gretsch-the instrument company known for its drums and guitars-celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration, it is holding the Next Gretsch Greats Unsigned Artist Competition, which starts today. Unsigned bands from around the world will compete to win a spot on the Gretsch 125th anniversary show in New York City in November and $15,000 worth of Gretsch drums, guitars and amps. The public will vote to determine the finalists, and judges will name the winner. For details on the competition, go to Gretsch125th.com.

YOUNG AND GIFTED

The New Orleans Darkroom has issued the call for photographers under 35 to submit entries for the Emerging Photographer 2008 show, which will be juried by Herman Leonard (whose work is pictured). Five young photographers will be selected, and their work will open during Art for Art's Sake Saturday, October 3, and it will show at the Darkroom's online gallery.

How to submit.

TICKET GIVEAWAYS!!

With one more exciting weekend of Jazz Fest in our midst there's no reason to let up now. We've decided once again to give away tickets to multiple night shows. BEGIN!!

On Saturday night May 3 the experimental jazz fusion trio Garage a Trois will perform at One Eyed Jacks. We have two pairs of tickets for this show to the first two people to answer the following questions:

What original member of Garage a Trois is no longer with the band, and who took his place?

On Thursday May 1 (yes, that's today) Tipitina's has Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave. playing in their late night slot, meaning the show starts around 2 am. OffBeat has two pairs of tickets to this show to the first two people who can correctly answer the following question:

What is Trombone Shorty's real name, and what is the name of his brother (also a well known local musician)?

And our final giveaway for this week...this Sunday May 4 the Howlin' Wolf will host the 11th Annual Krewe of Zigaboo featuring Zigaboo Modeliste with PBS (Porter, Batiste, Stoltz) and Rebirth Brass Band. The first two people to answer the following questions correctly will get a pair of tickets.

Zigaboo was the originator of a new style of drumming. What is the name given to this style?

Please email your answers to Promotions@offbeat.com no later than 3pm on Thursday May 1, 2008.

Good luck to all, and Happy Festing!

What else is going on this weekend?

MUSIC & CULTURE
FOR 20 YEARS!

The May 2008 "Jazz Fest Bible" issue of OffBeat is now on the street locally and is in the mail to our subscribers worldwide.

OffBeat's annual Jazz Fest issue features the Neville Brothers, with a special thanks to the Angela King Gallery for providing the image.

Our cover this month features the Brothers Neville, with artwork done by Patterson & Barnes. "P&B"'s compositions incorporate many mediums including acrylic, watercolor, India ink, collage, and constructions to capture the imagery and emotional power of Southern culture and blues music. The two met late in the 1980s in Birmingham. During that time they painted separately but began to critique each other's work and began collaborating in 1990. Their popularity quickly extended to New Orleans and into corporate collections in the U.S. and Europe, and private collectors including Jimmy Buffett, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, John Sebastian and actor Peter Weller. They have created commissioned paintings for the House of Blues, VH1, The Blues Foundation, Northwest Airlines, Warner Avalon, The Country Music Association, the Umbria Jazz Festival and the University Press of Mississippi. In addition, the McIlhenny Company, the makers of Tabasco, commissioned a portrait of Buddy Guy for the cover of their cookbook with The House of Blues--Cookin' Up The Blues. Delmark Records and Malaco Records have also commissioned paintings for album art work. Between gallery shows in New Orleans and commissions Patterson & Barnes spend time at their studios in coastal Florida and rural Alabama.

So we've got some famous guys by some famous artists on this month's cover. Visit the Angela King Gallery at 241 Royal Street to see more of their work, or click right here.

OffBeat's Jazz Fest issue also includes features and interviews with Leo Nocentelli. Shamarr Allen, Terrance Simien, Rob Wagner, Jazz Fest food, Gal Holiday, the Ponderosa Stomp, and so much more! OffBeat gives you the inside skinny on Jazz Fest performances, food and what's happening in the city throughout the month of May, post-Fest.

Look for your free copy of the "Jazz Fest Bible" in locations all around New Orleans, including all local hotels and motels, and of course, at Fairgrounds entrances. Each issue of OffBeat's "Jazz Fest Bible"contains not one but two stage schedules (one a fold-up pocket-sized guide), as well as a pocket guide to what's going on at local clubs throughout Jazz Fest. OffBeat is all you need to enjoy Jazz Fest and music after the fest!

Thank you so much for supporting New Orleans and Louisiana culture by reading OffBeat and the Weekly Beat.

IN THE CLUBS

Normally in this space we rhyme off some of the week's highlights, but every club has a week of highlights, and the overlap with our listings would be endless. Check them to see what's going on around town this week.

We can't overlook a few shows, though, that might otherwise fall between the cracks. Thursday night starting at 7 p.m. is Bo Fest, a benefit for Big Chief Bo Dollis. At the corner of Second and Dryades outside of Handa Wanda's, Dr. John, Henry Butler, Tommy Lee, Ludacris, ReBirth Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, Davell Crawford, Papa Mali, Marva Wright, the Pinettes Brass Band, the Wild Magnolias and JoJo Herman and John Bell of Widespread Panic will perform, and a few surprises are in the works. Cover charge will be $20 (streets will be barricaded). Entrances at Second and Dryades and also at First and Danneel. Celtic singer Betsy McGovern and the Poor Clares plays Friday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church (5212 S. Claiborne Ave.) at 7 p.m. Basin Street Records has four new releases-Irvin Mayfield and Ellis Marsalis' Love Songs, Ballads and Standards, Henry Butler's PiaNOLA Live, Dr. Michael White's Blue Crescent and Theresa Andersson's I the River. Butler and Mayfield will play Basin Street's 10th anniversary CD-release party at Le Chat Noir Saturday night at 8 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $25 from tickets@basinstreetrecords.com, and 10 percent of the gross sales go to Desire NOLA. Also on Saturday is NOizeFest (609 Lesseps St.), the festival started by the late Keith "Deacon Johnson" Moore to celebrate the musicians who never had a hope in hell of playing Jazz Fest. This year's festival will raise money to help Chris and Otter of Bacchanal with their medical bills, and so far 31 acts have confirmed including Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Ray Bong, Clint Maedgen, Rob Cambre, Mike Jones (from Belong), Helen Gillet, MC Shellshock and many more. Host/organizer Michael Patrick Welch encourages all guests to bring some interesting junk to help create an environment in keeping with the spirit of the event. Pat McLaughlin was scheduled to play Chickie Wah Wah on Saturday night, but he had to cancel because of back problems. Now the Alejandro Escovedo Orchestra tops a bill with Spencer Bohren, Dave Malone and Paul Cebar. Sunday night, Ray's Boom Boom Room hosts the official Neville Brothers afterparty starring the New IuPods, featuring Jay Neville with special guests Aaron and Cyril Neville. After Jazz Fest, power pop band the Whigs' come to One Eyed Jacks in support of their recent album, Mission Control, with What Made Milwaukee Famous and the Dead Trees opening.

...and keep Louisiana live music alive and kickin'!

NPR Morning Edition recently broadcast a story on the demise of music magazines. If you missed this story we encourage you to listen.

Like No Depression, Paste and others, OffBeat is experiencing similar issues, with postage costs increasing considerably (with another increase due May 10, 2008) and the loss of advertising dollars from record companies. Although OffBeat maintains a strong local presence, we also have struggled to replace lost record label advertisements. Since both Tower Records and Virgin Megastore closed in New Orleans, two full page monthly advertisements that were financed primarily by record labels were lost. Music magazines like Rolling Stone are insulated by these losses because their subscription base is large enough to attract other forms of advertising. Plus, OffBeat has been steadfast in maintaining a credible editorial stance, and is not rife with the paid "advertorial" that seems to dominate a lot of local publications.

If you are reading this email but you do not subscribe to the print edition to OffBeat we encourage you to purchase a subscription. Doing so helps OffBeat sell advertising to prospective advertisers who are look at our total distribution numbers before making the commitment. The larger the distribution the more likely OffBeat will be able to attract these advertisers.

When you buy an annual subscription you receive 12 issues including the Jazz Fest Bible issue and a free unique compilation CD of Louisiana music. If you like the Weekly Beat, please consider this small investment in our ability to provide information on New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture, and to pu rchase an OffBeat subscription.

Subscription prices to increase April 22

Our subscription prices increased effective April 22. This is the first subscription price increase since the magazine began nearly 21 years ago. The average increase is about 20%. The rising cost of postage (another increase is due in May) forced the increase:

DOMESTIC
1 year $39; 2 year $60; 3 year $90.
CANADIAN
1 year $45; 2 year $85; 3 year #125.
REST OF THE WORLD
1 year $90; 2 year $165; 3 year $235.

RENEWAL DOMESTIC 1 year $35; 2 year $50; 3 year $75.
RENEWAL CANADIAN 1 year $40; 2 year $80; 3 year $115.
RENEWAL REST OF THE WORLD 1 year $80; 2 year $155; 3 year $220.

LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTIONS:
Domestic $500; Canadian $650; Rest of the World $800.

SINGLE ISSUES: Domestic and Canadian (except Jazz Fest issue) $6; Jazz Fest issue $10; Rest of the Word (except Jazz Fest issue) $10; Jazz Fest issue $12.
