Bayou Boogaloo Begins Today on Bayou St. John

This evening, the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo begins its sixth annual festival along the lakeside banks of Bayou St. John. West African dance company N’fungola Sibo is first to hit the stage 5 p.m., followed by harmonica bluesman Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone and then Cyril Neville’s Tribe 13 until 9 p.m.

Saturday the music goes all day, starting at 11 a.m. with DJ Brice Nice and closing with Donald Harrison, Jr. and the Congo Nation from 7:45 to 9 p.m. For others, the festivities start much earlier with the annual Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl, meeting at the Buttermilk Drop Bakery and Cafe at 7 a.m. for sustenance before pedaling on (un)steady legs to the Mid-City Yacht Club, Finn McCool’s, Pal’s Lounge, Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Bayou Park Bar, and ending at the Bayou Beer Garden at 11:45 a.m.

The final day of the festival begins Sunday at 11 a.m. with JD Hill & the Jammers and the Lagniappe Brass Band, and closes with Khris Royal & Dark Matter and Rockin’ Dopsie, Jr. & the Zydeco Twisters each playing from 5:45 to 7 p.m. From 1:45 to 2:45, latin funk band Grupo Fantasma from Austin will be the first non-New Orleanian group to grace the Boogaloo. Punctuating the music Sunday is the Second Harvest Food Bank’s second anual Rubber Duck Derby. 10,000 rubber ducks are dropped into Bayou St. John, with prizes going to the top three finishers. Fest-goers can “adopt” a duck for $5 or get six ducks for $25, with money going to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

OffBeat will be present at Bayou Boogaloo, where you’ll be able to enter giveaways and pick up some free CDs. Stop by our tent (precise location TBD) for a chance to win $50 gift certificates to local record stores Euclid Records, Skully’z Recordz, and the Louisiana Music Factory.
